Download and burn memtest86 from http://www.memtest.org/
Reboot with the memtest CD and let it run overnight. Although you might hit paydirt instantly.

probably an IDE 2.5" adapter to standard 3.5"  IDE or SATA, depending on what you have on the desktop PC.

Other option is to buy a universal USB adapater that can connect to any drive.

$20 at tigerdirect.com and elsewhwere

I hope this helps !

Try running Combofix as it also fix safeboot issues.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop

Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log and attach it in your next reply by pasting it in the "Code Snippet" or "Attach File" window.
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

I have the same problem on a IBM Thinkpad T42.  I was going to try running Combofix, but if I can't boot to the C: drive because of the BSOD, how do I run Combofix on the drive?  This only thing i have seen Combofix scan is the boot partition.  What am I missing to accomplish waht you are saying?

Your issue looks similar to one that I'm working on right now:

I have a customer's computer that's doing the same thing - no boot to Safe Mode or Normal. Beep.sys error.

Here's what I did:

1. I booted the computer from the Windows Install disk.
2. Went into Recovery console and renamed c:\windows\system32\drivers\beep.sys to beep.bad
3. Copied a replacement beep.sys from another XP box and copied down to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\ folder.
4. Rebooted the computer and it started up in Safe Mode.
5. I'm running Malware Bytes Anti-Malware on it right now and it's cleaning the system.

Note the size of the beep file - the bad one I had was 108k and was edited yesterday. The one I replaced it with was 5k and hadn't changed since 2004.

I hope that helps!

May I know how you could create a HJT log when "pc WILL NOT BOOT TO SAFE MODE, OR ANY MODE."?

Glad it worked.

The PC I was working on had System Antivirus 2008 on it. Same thing, different name. After cleaning it up it runs ok.

I took my drive out and connected it to a USB controller and ran an AV scan. Sure enopugh beep.sys was infected with a virus. I copied one from my working system and then it was able to boot. I had WinAntiVirus2008 amongst other trojans and viruses. Thanks for the help!
