Timeout error when opening Activities screen

When opening the CRM Activities form get the error 'Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.'

The related tables have the following record counts and open fine in SQL:

ActivityPointerBase - 239,339
ActivityPartyBase - 254,731
ActivityMimeAttachment - 1,001 (attachments)
