I have XP Home edition,  The windows search companion is blank when I select search files or folders.  I have reinstalled search assistant, followed the instructions on Microsoft for blank fields, (installing search assistant, registering vbscript.dll and also expanding jscript.

What else can I try.

If you have Microsoft Desktop Search and/or Google Desktop, please try un-installing them. Google causes this problem many times, and the Microsoft Search can conflict with search assistant in some cases.

If you have it, it should be listed in add/remove programs. Look for an entry that says either "windows desktop search", or "MSN Search Toolbar with WDS".

Presume you have checked for Malware.  Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is excellent:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

You could also run the system file checker.
Start>Run
type >>          SFC /scannow

yes I looked at article 831430.  Article 319949 is for sp1,  have sp3 installed.  I ran scannow also.  I have virus software installed no virus.  I ran trendmicro online Housecall and had not viruses or spyware.  Any other ideas??/

i resolved the problem.   I ran regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll.  and then reinstalled search assistant.

I found it on the following link:
