Not without jail-breaking the iPhone.

The iPhone is CLOSELY linked with iTunes and it really is the only simple way to transfer music and video onto the iPhone.

What problems did you have with iTunes??

well, there are quite a few problems:

1) i created a new playlist but it didn't appear in my iphone after sync
2) .mp4 files should be supported but i got an error message saying .mp4 files aren't supported
3) none of the files in my new playlist got transfered to my iphone

1. Playlists .. when the iPhone is connected to the computer and appears in iTunes .. click on it and go to the MUSIC tab .. make sure that the Sync Music box is checked .. and if you want to copy JUST a few playlists .. make sure the relevant playlists are checked.

2. MP4 files ARE supported on the iPhone HOWEVER there are several versions of MP4 and there are several MP4 "standards" out there. If you decoded your MP4's with (non Apple) generic software they may not necessarily be compatible with your iPhone.  Only MP4 videos downloaded from the iTunes store are 100% guaranteed to work.  For other MP4 files you may need to convert them to MOV files and then re-import to iTunes.

3. When you select a new playlist (see item 1 above) then you need to re-run the SYNC command on the Home Page of the iPhone settings in iTunes.

Don't be angry ;-(

Certain playlists will NOT appear as available to the iphone if they do not contain music files that can be copied.
For example I have a playlist called Radio .. which has radio stations and some music video stuff, which won't play on the iPod .. so it is empty.

In your iTunes Library .. how many music files do you have?? Can you try changing the settings on the Music Tab to Selected Playlists and checking the "Recently Played" playlist.
I assume there are tracks in this playlist in iTunes.
Then press the SYNC button bottom right .. does it copy that music now?

Can you answer the questions I posed ..
Can you see and play music in the Recently Played playlist in iTunes (not he one on the iPhone).  Can you confirm that they are MP3 files and are not copy protected audio files.

OK .. finally .. the MP4 files are Video format and not necessarily iPhone compatible.  Just because you view them in iTunes does not mean that they are suitable to run on the iPhone.  MP4 video needs to be encoded using one of a few supported codecs and at a specific resolution for the iPhone.
