Outlook Opens Very Slow

I have two machines I am working on that have similar issues with Outlook.  They both have duo core processors with over 4 gig of RAM.  When Outlook opens two icons appear on the task bar.  It takes almost 5 minutes before the screen will populate.  Once it finally appears, the second icon on the task bar disappears.  During this process, no other applications will work.  Is there a solution to making it run faster.   My client is so frustrated. He is looking into different products.

I think this covers all the areas; however, I believe the problem I was having was related to similar problems I was having with Word & Excel.  It required a change in the DDE settings.
