I am unable to install Visual Studio 2008, trial edition on my windows server 2003(sp1, installed update for sp2) os.
I was having vs 2005 and other components installed so I reformatted my os completely and installed the following
.net framework 2.0 sp1
.net framework 3.0 sp1
sql server 2005 express edition
configured iis to allow asp.net 2.0, did surface area config, installed moss 2007
But when I try to install vs 2008, It fails while installing framework 3.5. It gives a error log as follows
(I have even tried installing the .net framework sdk)

Try this,

Click on the Start menu, choose All Programs, then Accessories, then right-click on the Command Prompt item and choose Run as administrator
Run .NET Framework 3.5 setup from the administrator cmd prompt that appears

If the above work around does not help, you can use the following steps as an alternative:

Click on the Start menu, choose Run, type appwiz.cpl and click OK
In the Add/Remove Programs control panel (or the Programs and Features control panel in Windows Vista), choose the item on the left side that is named Add/Remove Windows Features (or Turn Windows Features on or off in Windows Vista)
Locate the Internet Information Services (IIS) feature and choose to fully uninstall IIS
Re-run .NET Framework 3.5 setup
(optionally) Go back to the Add/Remove Windows Features control panel and re-install IIS after .NET Framework 3.5 setup completes

Appears to be you have a previous installed or bad-installed version of .net framework 3.5
Have a look to this MSDN forum with a problem similar to yours:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2517868&SiteID=1

Try uninstalling .net 2.0 then installing .net 3.5

also, before installing VS, you have to uninstall all previous beta versions, including related components like sqlserver, MSDN, .net framework, etc.

are you installing with administrator priviledges? That is, selecting the setup.exe icon, right button, "Run as Administrator ?

I uninstalled only .NET framework 2.0 and then tried but it did not install
I uninstalled all the components
.net framework 2.0 sp1
.net framework 3.0 sp1
MOSS 2007
sql server 2005 express edition
.net framework sdk
and then tried to install but still it did not work.

I was able to install VS 2008 after downloading and installing .net framework 3.5 sp1 separately instead of using the default one vs 2008 setup.
