Are you planning to install additional software on your ESXi system or what is the reason for your question?

We are trying to download software that is developed for the Linux OS RHEL4/RHEL5 and wandered if there would be any compatibility issues with loading it on the Linux+ VMware.  Also, would there need to be any adjustments that would need to be made to the install configurations. - Thanks

Well, that mostly depends on the software itself.
If you're using a bundled ESXi installation, you can't install software in the host operating system (the ESXi itself), but if you have the unbundled installation of ESXi running it's theoretically possible to install software there, but I'd not recommend that, as the host operating system on ESX is somewhat crippled down and is only made for what it's good for: Virtualization.

So, maybe your question is if you can install the downloaded software in any of the virtual machines created ontop of the ESX server and yes, if you install any redhat compatible operating system (CentOS, Redhat, ...) into your virtual machine, it is fully compatible to RHEL4/5/whatever.

But, I'm still not sure that I understood your question...
