rookie cisco pix 501 question

I am a newbie to the cisco world.
I need a little more enterprise router at the house to VPN to the office, so i got a cisco pix 501

i am trying to follow the doc and it is driving me crazy.
I am trying to set up outside ip addess

i am enabled

i think i am doing what the usage tells me but i get the error message

pixfirewall# ip address outside 12.202.216.3 255.255.255.0
Type help or '?' for a list of available commands.

can someone give me some insight what i am doing wrong with this command
Usage:  [no] ip address <if_name> <ip_address> [<mask>]

To enter configuration mode

#conf t
