Connecting to Exchange Server outside AD domain

I'm trying to configure Outlook 2007 clients to connect to an Exhange 2007 server that sits outside our Active Directory domain.  Outlook keeps trying to authenticate with the domain controller after authenticating with the external Exchange server, when there appears to be no reason for this.

Am I missing some configuration step?  Why is this happening?

Your explanation of the problem isn't 100% clear. What exactly is happening in Outlook? Are they getting an error? When you say it tries to authenticate with the domain controller, are you referring to one of your internal domain controllers, meaning the domain controller they are logged in to?

Also, is the account they are using to connect to externally the same as the internal account name?

Thanks for your help anyway. I solved the problem myself.

I needed to also add the autodiscover CNAME record to the domain controlled by the Windows server, for some reason.  Doing this killed the authentication requests coming from it although I don't quite understand why.
