laptop recovery without optical drive

hi

im thinking of buying a toshiba protege r500, the model without the optical drive.but i was thinking if system recovery would be possible without an external drive and if yes then how?

System recovery may be more tricky.  But, you can use a USB optical drive to boot off of and as far as data recovery you could always pull the hard drive out and recover data from a different computer.

i do have an external hard drive and i would be given system recovery cds even though there is no optical drive.isnt there some way of restoring system usingn my external hard drive?im not worried about me data...i have backup.

No there is no way to restore your system using just your external hard drive.

I would suggest that you also get an external optical drive so that you can use the restore media that comes with your laptop.  With the external optical drive you can boot off of your recovery CDs.  I just called Toshiba technical support 1-800-240-7100 (of course they transfered me to someone else) and confirmed that you can boot off of an external optical drive.
