I have a standard WSS install and are facing an issue where i have a document library with all my word templates (.dot).

What i am after is when the template is selected it opens Word as a new document based on that template,
Is this something i can configure?
Or am i looking at custom dev work or a third party app??

Cheers

As a copy of the sharepoint document is made when you create a new document of that type why not change the templates from .dot to .doc in the document libary. That way users get a copy of the template as a .doc file to work with and you can still edit the .doc template itself should you later wish to change it.

Yes that would work in most cases, this way i still have the issue of the user being able to upload the document (or save) back to sharepoint over righting the original.

Version management could be used - but this creates unnecessary overhead of someone managing the library.

If forgot to explain that you can create each template as a content type so they will not display in the list itself.

At the site level create a new content type of Document type and you will get an option to upload your template document (in .doc format). Give the new content type an appropriate name

Then in toye document library enable management of content types (under tghe advanced menu) and add your new content type to the list which will now become a template.

There is a way to do this without haveing to create a site content type (I have done so) but I can't for the life of me figure out how I did it now
