As a copy of the sharepoint document is made when you create a new document of that type why not change the templates from .dot to .doc in the document libary. That way users get a copy of the template as a .doc file to work with and you can still edit the .doc template itself should you later wish to change it.

Yes that would work in most cases, this way i still have the issue of the user being able to upload the document (or save) back to sharepoint over righting the original.<br />

Version management could be used - but this creates unnecessary overhead of someone managing the library.

I have a standard WSS install and are facing an issue where i have a document library with all my word templates (.dot).<br />

What i am after is when the template is selected it opens Word as a new document based on that template,<br />
Is this something i can configure?<br />
Or am i looking at custom dev work or a third party app??<br />
