Vista laptop computer

We have a Dell laptop running Vista.  It continuously reboots when started--if you push F8 and choose last known good configuration it goes ahead with normal boot and runs fine.  Next time you restart same problem until you press F8 and choose last known good configuration.  Would appreciate any ideas on what might be causing this?  I am booting into safe mode now and trying to run virus/spyware scan.

have you checked for viruses?  sounds like it may be a virus that's not being erased and therefore after running vista, the virus cause the same issue again...these types of viruses hide in the registry...usually in the startup or explorer keys...look at your ms config and see if you have any shady looking programs at startup...

other than that, it may be a vista problem and you will have to repair the install with a vista cd...

As Silemone suggested, the best course of action is to boot the machine (either in safe mode or last known good config), run msconfig (simply type msconfig in Run and press Enter) and go to the services and startup tabs, disabling anything that isn't critical to Windows (anything to do with any 3rd party apps you have installed etc).

Then try a normal restart and see what happens...

You could also check the System restore to see if you have any restore points prior to when the problem started?

And do you know of any softare or anything that was installed just prior to the problem occuring?

Further information--computer will not boot into safe mode--will only boot into last known good configuration.

Definitely check your system restore points to see if you have one prior to when this problem began... If you have then it'll probably be the easiest way to sort this issue out!

Do not have restore point prior to problem.

Virus and spyware scan runs daily.  History shows threats found and removed with no problems.

yeah...the threats may be found and removed, but that doesn't mean there isn't a hidden program that is called by a value in the startup in registry that recreates removed items and stores them under a random name...therefore recreating the cycle...

A Hijackthis scan log would be a good idea:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download

Click on "Do a system scan and save a log file"
Upload the scan log here using the "attach code snippet" box below.

Your HJT log looks clean apart from this:

O23 - Service: SpywareRemover Scanning Engine (SpywareRemoverSrv) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\SpywareRemover\SpywareRemoverSrv.srv.exe (file missing)

SpywareRemover is a rogue anti-spyware app; if it were active on your pc, you would expect to get a lot of pop-ups about how infected you supposedly were.
Looks like AVG may have picked it up (file missing), but to be sure, I would run a scan with Malwarebytes' Antimalware:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Make sure it is fully updated, "Perform a Quick Scan" and then "Remove Selected".
Then reboot and check the problem is still current...

Last known good resets changes to drivers, that is, it is mainly used to reset driver installations to the previous state. So it culd be, LKG resets it but after the next logon vista reinstalls something in the background that is faulty and leads to startup problems.

Dell technician was able to fix machine while logged on remotely to it.  I was not at the machine when he was working on it, but this is a transcript of his log.

"checked eventvwr.disabled startups.sched chkdsk.reboot.checking disks. sys reboot again.ran startup repair-no errors.nogo with system restore.last known config again-DTC .checked startups with autoruns.disabled processes.updated security SW.reboot.ok.login ok.reboot again-ok"

Dell translated this to me as he disabled some items in strart-up and that fixed the problem.

I am splitting points between all those that helped.  Thanks for your time.  Machine seems to be running OK since Dell fix.
