i am working on a WSS 3.0 site (not MOSS), which has a dedicated AD setup for authentication,
created some AD security Groups and mapped it one on one to a sharepoint group.

by doing this, users who are added to the AD group are authenticated and can get onto the sharepoint site, however their user profiles (User Information List) do not exist. i believe this is the default sharepoint behaviour.

i would like to find out if there is a way to create user information list entries based on the AD user profile.

Hi,

You can import profiles of Users from AD to SharePoint profiles.
Configuration and import scheduling is done through Central Administration > Shared Services.
Also, addition properties can be added and mapped to AD.

Hi,

Sorry, missed the information on WSS 3.0

One of ways that i can think of, is custom code. Read information from AD and sync it in "User Information List" on WSS 3.0

Something like this -

3rd Party solution around this -
