Can you explain the security issues of having OWA on same exchange server with the mail stores and public folders?

Primarily OWA servers have some amount of accessibility from the internet. Putting any type of data on these servers poses some level of risk simply because that server is accessible from the internet. Should someone be able to hack the server they could gain access to that data.
