We have substantial supply of old HP toner for listed LaserJets.  Current printer is HP LJ 4050N.  Is the toner itself compatible with the 4050N?  (We realize the cartridges are not interchangeable.)  If toner is usable, where can we get instructions for refilling 4050N toner cartridges?

You can use the toner in any HP monochrome laser printer. The laser printers and toner carts from HP are actually made by Canon.

Only refill the carts 2-3 times (max 5) after that they could damage your printer.

This is a document that describes using a specific refill services product. But you can probably follow it for your use.
