Hello,
I thought a favicon can only be a static small icon image, but i have seen this site:
http://www.erodvd.nl/
(warning, kind of NSFW adult site) that has an animated icon... how is this possible and how can i make such an icon?

Thanks!

Hi lopband,

There are some differences between various versions of browsers as far as displaying an animated favicon. Use the code below (between the <head> tags) to cover both:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >
<link rel="icon" href="favicon.gif" type="image/gif" >

You create the animated icon as a simple animated gif file. The gif can be any small (16 x 16 image that you animate in a program such as photoshop or an animated gif program. Here's a freeware one: http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/ I like Animation Shop: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1152105040771#tabview=tab0

One could make a simple animated gif with this online tool: http://picasion.com/

You can create static (not animated) favicons from images here: http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/Favicon/

Animations may not show up in IE (they do in Firefox) so it's good to have a back up icon  (just use the code above) and have a static as well as animated icon for your guests.
