Problems with IIS performance - ASP/SQL App - Server just Hangs on some request with low processors Utilization

Good evening -

I have an application that I built ... It's a threaded discussion board application that I've been running for many years now. It's written in pure ASP and has a SQL backend -

Lately, for no reason, it just crawls to a halt - IN fact, earlier today, I was getting an error that the SQL connection was no available - I have also been getting Dr. Watson errors too -

So, today I moved the application to another server also running windows 2003 R2 SP2 and a page that usually comes up in 1-2 seconds still can take 20-30 seconds

I've tried to monitor several things in performance monitor

The memory and processor utilization are both very low ... and i usually don't get more than 160 concurrent users. What i did notice is that the pages/sec sometimes goes from zero to 500 or 700...but I have a ton of free memory. in fact, total RAM is 4192400, Availalbe is 2629580 and cache is 22708644...

Why am I getting so many pages/sec if i have so much free memory? Could that be part of the problem?

Also, the SQL server which is on another server ... in the last few months, it appears that some commands I give to the serer through the SQL manager seem to execute very slowly ... however the applications that access the DB seem to go very quick (except this problem I'm having now) --

The problem with IIS seems to occur when the user load starts getting high -- Just looking for what performance counters I should be monitoring on both the IIS and SQL side - -Thanks so much for the help

How big has the database become?
How much memory is the SQL using?
Did you enable AWE on the SQL 2005?

Run sql profiler for 20 minutes or 500MB.  Then use the Advisor to analyze the data.  It might provide suggestions for additional indexes that would improve the performance.

The database is 650 Megs

Total Memory in system is 4GB, Available is 2GB, Cache is 750K and the SQL process is using 1.57 GB

I'll have to run profiler and get back to you on that - I am not running the AWE option and i have the memory from 0 to 2GB as the range ... and Index creation memory i 0 and mim memory per query is 1024.

Check system integrity.  RAID type, status?
Check DISK I/O in perfmon.

check for the total number of open connection in SQL profiler, might be in code the connections are not closed
check index on the table - if more insert update then index may hamper the performance, if more select query then try to add index on unique column
check IIS performance and IIS log file - IIS log file will give more detail like which page is getting more hit and check that page
check the SQL used, check for the select query if it is using "with no lock"
check in performance count which one is shooting up

Possible the IIS Log file is causing the delay
Kindly check the last log filesize for that particular domain

Or do you limits the number of visitors to your site at IIS?

hi, check for the SQL database size and free memory, means check for the table space free space, also check the SQL log file size and free space
check for the hotfix for OS, IIS and SQL Server, also check for the driver update for H/W and software

To answer the question about RAID integrity, I tried running it on two completely different servers and have the same problem. The application just slows down to a crawl - The application is very database intensive ... but all the tables are indexed and the performance when 20-30 users is on is blazing fast -

ASPSQL ServerCOM: Later tonight when the load gets heavy, I'll check total number of open Connections in SQL profiler as well as check indexes -

Connection errors are one thing (i.e. no available connection slots available.)
Slowness can often be remedied through the use of AWE by reducing the amount of disk I/O.  i.e. let sql take up as much as 3GB in AWE.  In this case, the majority of the database will be loaded into memory and would not need to be swapped.
Another thing is to elevate the priority of the sql server Properties of the server in SSMS there should be an option to boost sql server priority.  This is also where you can define the AWE settings.
Another thing to check is how the server is prioritized properties of my computer\advanced\performance\advanced.  Along the way check the options for best performance, programs rather then background.

Since this is a database intensive application, the server where IIS resides can also be the issue since it has some performance handling.  try increasing the number of workers.  Does the ASP use its own application pool or a common application pool?

You might want to setup perfmon that would track cpu/memory/disk I/O,network usage along with sql and IIS counters for both servers at the same time to provide a data set that can potentially be correlated i.e. 40 simultaneous connections to IIS generate X amount of disk I/O on the IIS server while at the same time spiking the CPU along with 40*x queries to the SQL server etc.
With this information you could see where the bottleneck is possibly but unlikely in the network.

If you know that the slowdown occurs in the evening around 7pm, start the profiler a few minutes before then.  Since your application is very database intensive, the 500MB capture file might not be enough to capture the event, you might have to go to 1GB or more.
Another option is to use SSMS to determine the execution plan of the various queries.  You could then use the adviser to analyze and recommend adjustments based on the queries rather than analyzing the captured transactions.
The difference is in assessing the weight of the changes.
I.e. if you have 20 queries that you analyze and add indexes based on the recommendation, your database can grow by 25% for the added indexes (lets say 20).
Analyzing the transactions, you might see that there are two or three queries that are common and only require three indexes to be added, the database will not grow as much nor will there be the added load for unnecessary index queries.

Wow, sorry for the long delay in responding back to the thread. I was out of the country for quite some time.

I ran IISSTATE on the IIS server. I have been getting Dr. Watson errors on W3WP.EXE ... I'm attached the IISState output file while monitoring the W3WP.EXE process ...

Hopefully this thread is still being monitored!

Could you get and install the windows 2003 symbols libraries.
Can you check whether IIS crashes anytime you use the file upload form? Or does a crash occur when the file is of a particular large size (>200Kb)?

You know .. interesting some people have been complaining that they are getting a file upload failure ... and even though I have the limit set to well over 200KB, many people have been complaining about it and it does seem to fail at times for no apparent reason.

This particular site probably gets no more than 200 concurrent users at a time ... maybe 5-6 million page views a month. So, it has some volume, but not out of control.

I was running this application on another server and switched it over to this one and am experiencing the same problem. The problem just crept up out of nowhere ...

I'm installing the symbols as we speak.

http://foradvice.net/smartuploadsetup.htm

Look in the section dealing with IIS6 and file size under "Configuration required" dealing with parameter AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed.

I installed the  symbols in C:\<system path>\symbols

Created an env. var for _nt_symbol_path=C:\<system path>\symbols ... restarted iisstate to match the process ID of W3WP.EXE -

Now i did a little research on the ASPMacRequestEntity Allowed ... As I had mentioned, only occasionally do large files not upload properly ... not always ...

The documentation I read about that states that ASP Upload components don't actually use the Metabase.xml file as a reference point...the upload file is controlled by the installed component rules. I'll edit it anyway and see what happens I suppose!

Not sure what you mean, the metabase.xml is the represenation of the IIS configuration.  Where did you set the upload file size limit?

If I am not mistaken, the data you provided deals with an exception thrown in thread 23 which seems to have been processing a file upload.

I was reading that the ASPMaxRequestEntity Allowed entry is ignored by third party ASP component uploads...Not quite sure how accurate that is so I went ahead and increased the field as you suggested to no limit ... installed the symbols before that and set the Environment variable. Restarted the W3svc and re-ran IISstate -- Let's see what happens now! ;)

Thank you for your help thus far - Greatly appreciate it

So it crashed again -- I got a Dr. Watson error - When I rebooted, I immediately got two or three dr. watson errors referencing W3Wp.EXE with Faulting module ntdll - Happens when I reboot -- I've seen other people with this as well - Any ideas? I'll run IISSTATE again and see if I can catch it

Are the errors you mentioned above, those that you have an option to send to Microsoft?  Have you look at the details of the error message that would be reported to MS?  An "improperly"  closed application generates an exception event that leads dr. watson to record the event and notify MS.  At times, these errors deal with .Net Framework widgets/functions that might not have had enough time to "clean up" after the process existed.
ntdll is ofter reported as the cause of a crash because of the large scope of functions that it handles, once you get the iisstate, it should narrow down to a function or another dll as the cause.

Yes - I do get that kind of error - ... however i have not gotten the Dr. watson with IISstate loaded yet - Does IISstate prevent the Dr. Watson? Also, is it possible that the process ID for W3WP can change while iisstate is loaded? I'm assuming it would change if the process crashes...

Thanks

There is a setting dealing with work process cleanup.  i.e. if a worker process ran x amount of time it is recycled.
I do not believe IISSTATE prevents Dr. watson from collecting error events.

You are using the .Net 1.1 version based on the microsoft.net framework that is loaded.
can you check the advanced performance settings/advanced tab under the properties of my computer.
Is the system setup for program preference or background preference with CPU and memory?  System apearance settings, best performance or best appearance?
Since you have 2GB of ram available, not sure why are caching >2GB. When the cache is being swapped in and out, this will be reflected in the disk I/O rise.

Performance options -> Advanced Tab: Adjust for Background Services

Memory Usage -> Adjust for best performance of: System Cache -

Should I change the second one?

I have 4 Gigs in this system with 1.3 used for system cache and 3.4 available

You should alter both, you have an application server so priority of both memory and cpu should be for programs.
Also check the settings on your network card (file and printer sharing properties) to see which traffic is prioritized there.  It should be prioritized for network applications versus file sharing

In what way do you believe those items are related to the Dr. Watson errors?

Those changes in settings will not directly address dr. watson errors since I have no idea what those errors are.
What it might do is improve performance of IIS/SQL on the server by reducing disk I/O for swapping memory.  Does the SQL service has the higher affinity (above average)? Check SQL server properties to see whether boost cpu priority is checked?

You should retask the systems to optimize it for the application services they provides.  Then see whether the errors are still an issue.

You have many modules loaded in IIS. IIS could be using 400MB of memory or 650 MB of memory.  The issue is does IIS everytime it needs to handle a worker process, trigger a swap event where data has to be transferred from disk so the process can work?

Are there firewalls between the IIS server and the sql server that include logs?

The actual CPU utilization for both servers is pretty low ... as is the memory utilization. It appears like it's some sort of a memory violation or invalid procedure call ... I tested on two different servers and got the same thing. On the other hand, since i made those changes you suggested, I haven't had any slow downs in several days now. I'm going to keep monitoring the situation.

I need to go back and run the SQL performance testing / analysis things you recommended -

Quick question ... had another Dr. Watson the other day ... although the PID had already changed ...I did capture something from the screen though - What do gather from this?

Do not know.
The exception could be following the changes MS made to their security model.
Check whether the modules you use have newer versions. persist software AspEmail, AspJpeg.
i.e. the module in question cross borders violates an access restriction implemented to make IIS more secure from one of the 'vulnerabilites'. i.e. accessing memory outside their scope, trying to get more memory etc.

AH ok -- it seems like hte performance has been great since i made two changes ... one of which you recommended dealing with max file size - The other one i changed was the             AspProcessorThreadMax="50" (from 25) - Not good troubleshooting to change two things at once...but I might reduce that back to 25 and see if it starts crashing again...Thanks

Just an FYI - The slowness started up again ... finally figured out what it was --

It was a licensing issue with SQL server. I was actually having issues with concurrent connections. I converted the entire database over to MYSQL and the problem went away. Go figure
