My hosts file is locked. I can't delete or edit it in XP or Vista. I've reset permissions to no avail. Norton anti-virus found a URL hijacking program and problem left temporarily.

I cannot delte r edit my hosts files on two pcs, one running Vista and the other running XP. I need to insert one line.  But when I try I get a message that someone process is using HOSTS, or that the compouter cannot created a HOSTS file. I've tried different programs even thought that claim to be HOSTS editors.  DOS doesnt' do the trick.  I've checked/changed permissions and checks on the file's attrilbutes.

Some av and internet security products will lock the hosts file: Zone Alarm; Spybot; etc.
I would check the config of whatever security apps. you are running...

I apologize for not following up on my own question.  I discovered that Spybot's tools has a HOSTS editor that was able to make and save changes to the file.
Thanks to everyone who joined in the question.
