CentOS 5.2 - HP Proliant ML350 G5
Hi All!
I have successfully install an HP Proliant ML350 G5 with CentOS 5.2 x64 with HP SmartStart 8.11
CentOS is similar to RedHat Enterprise 5 but free
All the HP software and service are installed and work fine.
I'm able to control Proliant status thrue "System Management Homepage" using Web browser https://xx.xx.xx.xx:2381
Raid status is displayed as well and all other information (temperature,...) is also show correctly
However, i'm searching how to setup the system to notify me by mail if an error occur on Hard disk or something else... And if an error occur on Hard Drive, how to manage raid array...
Hopping a RedHat/Proliant experts can Help...

Cédric MARCOUX

Inkevin, thanks for suggestion, however it seems to be a very loud procedure to get simply an alert when Hard drive fail!?
I have installed the package, it have made a lot of things without any error.
Now something is installed on my system but I don't know how to access this new tool...
I have read the documentation that talk about oracle database aso... but now way to check something.
I'm very afraid by this complicated way... Is there any other method or simple agent to survey the system???
Regards

Sending an email when your hard drive fail is not simple as you thought. You need to have SNMP integrate in Insight System management to be able to grab the error and sent it through SMTP. What makes you think its simple?
Anyway, you don't have to use Oracle database. Any database system will work with SIM: MySQL, SQL, PostgreSQL...
This tool is the best free one support HP hardware by all means. I don't think you can find another free tool will do it.
If you want a third party software that support HP: HP SiteScope.

No, I don't want specialy another solution, but, at first view, it was looking very loud.
As you advice, I will study deeper your solution.
At the moment, the application is installed and I will serach now how to use it...
I keep you informed...
PS: Any trick for first steps is welcome :)

Here is the first tip:
You don't have to install it on your server. Pick a PC and install any OS that supports by SIM. I think it supports all OSs (event linux or windows client). You can make this box to be SIM server and your server to be agent server.

Well, as I understand, the software you suggest is a Full management package?
But what about the software used "Event Notifier Config" on Windows Server 2003
Is there any equivalent on Linux???
See attached file for screenshot of the app.

Event notifier is a hit and miss even on Windows. I am not sure it will work with your Linux so I can't recommend you that. A lot of time, your event viewer does not show a specific message on hardware failure. Only your hardware vendor offers you the best hardware management tools. For example, if you are running Dell boxes, your best bet would be Open Manage Server Management. I took a hard lesson on it, so don't rely on Event Viewer. SIM is much more sensitive and accurate. Once you set it up, all your HP servers are in good hand.

I go Crazy.
I have installed HPIM, the setup seems to work fine, however I don't know what to do next?
Nothing has change on the webpage https://xx.xx.xx.xx:2381
Is there another page for HPIM? Another command line tools?
Thanks

What is HPIM? Is it HP SIM misspelled?
Copy the snapshot of what you have on the browser and post it. BTW, did you install any web servers on the SIM server? You need web server installed WBEM. Also, make sure its service is running.

OK. From where you are at, click on Version Control Agent (make sure you allow the popup page). Click on Change Agent Settings and login using your SIM admin information
Server: your SIM server IP
Username: your SIM admin
Password: your SIM password
Click on the drop down menu and select the latest support pack --> Check the checkbox --> Finish
Click on the little icon by Overall Software status to update your firmware.
After firmware update, reboot your server and log back in you should not see that error. If you still see the error, go back to the Agent control version and make sure all firmware under support column are green.

Do you have SIM server set up? SIM server is the main server that hold repository.
Is Centos.proliant your fully qualified name of the SIM server?
Can you ping centos.proliant? Can you ping its IP address? If you can ping IP use IP instead of name
Did you set SNMP traps with community string name and trap server ip address? You need to set the trap to communicate with your SIM server.

centos.proliant is my unique server where is installed my Linux and all the PSP program.
As you advice before, I have install the HP SIM 5.2 wih Update 2 on this server.
To breack the confusion, I have only one server and wonder how to manage it...

sibliege,
The screen you show me is not SIM service it's HP System Management using in local service. You cannot set any alert using this feature.
Here is a good documentation to set SIM in your OS
http://www.howtoforge.com/hp_systems_insight_manager_centos
Please read the above documentation thoroughly and install SIM properly. After the installation, you get the web browser then type https://xxxxxx:50000 you should see something like this:
http://schettino.us/twiki/pub/JohnsBlog/BlogImages/hpsim.jpg
port 5000 is using for SIM service. Login with your SIM admin credential

Thanks,
this is what I was searching from the beginning, how to access this tool!!!
Now I'm trying to configure the server itself to send mail when error is trapped...
I have launch the wizard, setup smtp server and destination email.
I have try to unplug a disk to see if a email is sended however nothings happend.
I have launch a diagnostic on my server but it say:
"The system doesn´t support WBEM protocol, or doesn´t support WBEM indication.
The system doesn´t support SNMP protocol or it is not running on Windows."
Is this critical doctor???
Thanks

I thought my grade should be A since I am clear enough. J/K. Keep in mind the level on subject is important. If you grade yourself as an advance, I expect you to know the subject very well. Otherwise, don't be shied to lower your grade so the experts can give you more detail on the answer.

That's OK Sibliege. I was just reminding you for the next time. You need to read this rule to give out a proper grade in the future not to disappoint the volunteer experts. Giving higher grade when you get your answer will not affect to your points.

After you set up SIM, you can upgrade your firmware, send out alert via email, and lots more... You can also control other servers in the same platform. You need to pick it up yourself on the knowledge since it is a huge task.
