I want users to be able to recieve mail addressed to variants of there name (example name John Smith, I want him to be able to get mail thats been addressed to jsmith, johns, johnsmith, smithy etc.)  I have added the addresses to the e-mail address tab of the user, but when I send test messages to the names, they do not go through.

Do you get an NDR?  If the domain name is different (@domain1.com versus @domain2.com) each domain is going to need to be added to the accepted domains policy.

If you're just adding multiple SMTP aliases under the same domain no additional changes are required however you may need to give enough time for AD to replicate the changes before the Hub Transport servers are able to deliver messages using the new SMTP addresses.
