Hi Folks,

Currently backing up our production SAP server using backup Exec. Lately it has been failing intermittently and i cannot work out why. We use the SGMON utility during the backup window to slow things down. I have managed to catch where the backup fails and need some help in working out what it means. This is the error:

Hi,

This section here leads me to believe that the backup is attempting to backup an archive log that has a lock on it by another process or that does not exist anymore as it may have been cleaned up by an archive log backup.

Is your Backup Exec patched and the agents redeployed after the patch? Are you running this as a seperate job i.e. backing up SAP only? How are you scheduling the baclup i.e. from within SAP?

Backup exec is patched to the latest version. I am running the backups from within SAP (DB13). Backups have been working for a good while now but have just started failing. Some nights it will back up the data fine but fail on the logs or vice-versa. No pattern emerging. I have cleaned the tape unit, used a new tape and reset the drive to factory settings. I have another spare drive which i was going to install but this will require downtime for the production system and there is no guarentee this will work.

I think that first line is legite as this is just a normal entry when files are backing up. It is below that the error starts 'Abort Detected'.

I wish i could just make out what the SGMON error means!!!!

Anyway, thanks for the reply. I am willing to increase points to 500 if a solution is reached.

Cheers,

Baikie

I would be opening a call with Symantec (they still own BE?). The abort detected occurs right after the line. I can't find anything on the error number 0xfffffdfd that relates to your issue. Is this the same error no matter what the backup fails on?

If you change the drive I would also change the cable at the same time but if you have a spare its probably worth trying but if it does not work are you able to use that as your backup device for some time? You don't really want to shut the system down to test it and then have to shutdown again to change it back in quick succession. Better yet can you connect both drives at the same time?

Started the BEngine service in debug mode to troubleshoot but this seems to have solved the problem also!!

Thanks for the replies
