Joomla Import XML as articles into MySQL database

Thanks for reading

I have has a good look around the joomla forums and help and thought I would give this place a shot.

I have a load of XML files that I want to import into Joomla..... I'm quite happy to translate the XML into a standard XML if that is what is needed....but I can't seem to find anything that is definitive on how you go about importing XML data into Joomla

I worked out the database mappings and created a compatible xml schema that could be imported via a routine I wrote in to the database....it was a bit of a fuddle but got there

I've never come across a tool/plugin/component that does what you need. (that does not mean it doesn't exist)  That being said it wouldn't be too difficult to write one as joomla stores articles in a fairly basic sql table and the 1.5 framework its easy to extend through components and plugins.

All you really need to do is write some php that parses your xml and fires off the correct sql queries,  It would also mean you wouldn't have to adjust your current schema.

If you dont want to use php and learn how to make a joomla component you could just use some other language your comfortable with to parse the xml into and sql dump and patch your joomla db manually.

If you do decide to build a custom component heres some useful information:

to build a custom component you will need to use php and have a basic knowledge of sql,  the best place to start is the tutorials on the developer documentation wiki on the joomla.org

http://dev.joomla.org/component/option,com_jd-wiki/Itemid,32/

also there are two great books on joomla extension development published by packtpub

Learning Joomla! 1.5 Extension Development: Creating Modules, Components, and Plugins with PHP -
http://www.packtpub.com/Joomla-Extensions/book

Mastering Joomla! 1.5 Extension and Framework Development
http://www.packtpub.com/joomla-one-point-five-extension-framework/book

Learning Joomla is best for beginners but if you really want to understand how joomla works and build advanced components Mastering Covers everything.

hope that helps.
