multidimensional explode

hi experts,
I am trying to explode this $string = "1:2:3:a&2:3:7:j&5:2:6:b"  to a multidimensional array,
1:2:3:a&  
2:3:7:j&
5:2:6:b
where  my_array[x][y] is the vlaue in  x = row index and y = colmn index,
is there a function like explode('&',':',$string); ?
