I get this message when trying to access my external hard drive. Plus, it renamed the drive, it was MY BOOK (K)  and now it calls it LOCAL DISK (K).  I have thousands of photos on this drive and desperately want access to this. PLEASE help me!

What is the make of the drive?  It could be going bad.  Let me know so that I can provide a utility to test it.

I called a computer repair man and he transferred all my data to a new hard drive. He said this one had gone bad.

Did WDDiag provide an error code?  Sometime the errors are software and not hardware related.  The drive may still be usable.  Also, most WD drives come with a 3 year warranty.  With the error code you could have the drive replaced for free from WD.
