I'm creating a windows application using C#.  I have a dataset with two tables (Parent and child).  I want to show the Parent records Plus show any related child fields for an individual parent record.

Also, I am hand coding everything except placing the datagridview on the form.

This is not possible. DataGridView does not support this, you need to use DataGrid instead. If you want to use DataGridView (since DataGrid lacks many things), then you would need to place 2 DataGridView controls, one for parent records, and one for child records, and to synchronize them.
