I inserted a table into Komposer 3 by 3 and when I type in it,  the cell border moves to the right.  Do I have to define it first?  Also, will the table allow me to write in it?  Sometimes I cannot write in the table and I have to input the text into the source code.

You can't write directly into the table; you have to define a cell first.

<table>
  <tr>
    <td>Your text goes here</td>
    <td>Another set of text goes here</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td colspan=2>You can put more text into this cell if you want</td>
  </tr>
</table>

It will look something like this:
__________________________________________________
|                   |                             |
|Your text goes here|Another set of text goes here|
|___________________|_____________________________|
|                                                 |
|You can put more text into this cell if you want |
