sony vaio motherboard problem

I have a sony laptop and I can not get it to open up to the start page at all Would it be the motherboard?

Have you tried reseat memory, hard drive?
Also, try disconnect battery, press and hold power switch for few minute, and then install back battery and power up?

How do I reset the memory,hard drive?

i did the battery thing and now it's trying to do the set up with formatting a partition

thank you so very much. I thought it was a throw away. the computer store said it was shot and we needed  a new laptop.
