thread blocked causing slow website

we were asked to host this website but when we switched it live iti was really really slow on a powerful infrastructure which manages to deal with much much more traffic.

we have hd a quick look in to this using ants profiler and saw that initially just to load the homepage there was some thread blocking going on which was taking an age.

what seems to happen is when you hit the homepage it looks as if the website is trying to load - the progress bar crawls to about 10% and then jumps back to 0% and then the weebsite loads with the eprogress bar jumping to 100%. Weird...

We were asked to host it on .net 3.5 sp1

attached shows a trace of one user hitting the website's homepage.

I notice that within the code that is blocking there are calls to a DAL (Data Access Layer)  That's usually a prime candidate for blocking.

it ended up being a none compiled regular expression but the DAL added to our argument that the issue was with the code and I think part of the regular expression in question was in the DAL.
