Outlook / Exchange - "550 Authentication turned on in your email client"

Hey,
A client of ours has been havng issues sending us email.

It works sometimes but not others. Kinda 50/50.

The bounce message they get is as follows:
---------------------START
The message that you sent was undeliverable to the following:
      emailaddress@ourdomain.com (550 Authentication turned on in your email client.)
---------------------END

I think they are using Groupwise as a mail server.
We are using SBS 2003 with Exchange.

How should we troubleshoot this?

"550 Authentication Turned On in your Email Client" is more a generic Event. I believe there is a limit of 50 emails per 300 seconds lapse time. If you are doing a Large mailing this could be the problem. Or If there is any bad email address also this error could be returned.

It happens to our client generally when sending a single email to one of our staff. Sometimes there are a couple being CC'd as well.

What protocol they are using to configure the client like POP3 IMap Etc..

Sorry for slow reply. I had to do some more investigation

It seems its not only this one client.

Another using GMAIL received this bounce message half a dozen times on different days. However they where able to successfully send a messages by resending or waiting 5 mins....

Turned out to be a DNS issue thanks for the help anyway.
