I am running sql server 2005 on windows server 2003.  I have been asked to provide a count of transactions per year on the server so we can justify the cost of upgrading to a new server.  How can I get a transaction count for all databases???  Even if it is a count per minute or something, at least I will have a rough estimate.

SQL Server does not record the number of transactions.

If your application does, you're in luck.  Otherwise ... you're going to need to attach SQL Profiler and record the transactions for a time period & extrapolate from that.

The applications dont record number of transactions unfortunately.

What do I count in profiler?  How do I extrapolate it afterwards?

What you do in Profiler is a trace.  You can save that as a file to review ... you may end up pasting results into Excel for analysis.

But if you find that over the course of an hour you have , for example, 1800 transactions ... then you can multiply that out to get a per-day figure.  Actually ... you may be more interested in peak usage.  In which case you'd want to capture a peak hour and perhaps divide to get transactions per minute or per second at peak.
