When I plugged in my USB HD drive it didn't come up on the explorer window.

When looking furthur I see that an exclamation is was on the "USB mass storage devices" in device manager.
The device properties state that "the device could not start".
What to do?

I have two suggestions.  Have you installed the necessary drivers?  Also, and this is weird but I had it happen to me, have you checked that the USB cable is plugged into the device correctly?  The cable fit into my HD two different ways, but only one worked.  Until I plugged it in correctly, I had this same problem.  Good luck.

Ok here are some troubleshooting tips for similar issues:
- try the USB HD on a different USB port, and if pluging into USB hub...dont... (if ur plugging in the fron USB, dont...plug it in the back usb)
- try tthe USB HD on a different pc, if it works...then ur pc has the problem.
please keep us posted for further advice

I found a way to resolve the issue by removing all USB drivers.
Rebooting the Server (hard thing to do when a live server)
And reinstalled them.
It seems that the USB mass storage was detected and running again.
