Hi,

We have a tape library with 4 drives and I am wanting to create 4 daily jobs that will run Mon-Thurs and use media from the media set called Daily ( this has an overwrite protection of 4 weeks ).Then on friday I will have 4 Weekly backups that will run doing a full backup ( the dailys only being incremental ) which will use media from the weekly media set ( again this has overwrite protection for 4 weeks ) .
However this is when I run into a problem, I have added 14 new tapes to use for the Daily backup so have moved them into the daily media set, but when I do this the protection gets applied and are not overwritable for 4 weeks. If I put the tapes back into the scratch pool they then become available to overwrite but this also means that the weekly backup may use these tapes.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong or a possible work around ?

Double check the overwrite protection you assigned to the daily media set.

Set the Overwrite Protection Period to 27 Days (28 Days = 4 Weeks - 1 Day = 27)
Set the Append Period to Infinite

This will allow you write to the media till it's full then on the 27th day can be Overwritten.

Weekly backup will not grab the new scratch tapes if you have the (tools-options) set to overwrite recyclable media before scratch media and there's sufficient weekly media available in library. Daily won't use them either of course if there are daily tapes available so don't put the old daily tapes in the library so it has to use the new ones in scratch instead.
