I am using Exchange 2003 server along with a SonicWALL e-mail appliance.  For various reasons, I need  to use another WINDOWS-BASED smtp server application to sit between Exchange and the SonicWALL to handle incoming and outgoing mail.  I want it to do nothing more than act as the outbound "smarthost" for the Exchange server to the SonicWALL and as the inbound relay from the SonicWALL to the Exchange server.  I do NOT need spam filtering or any other features, but ideally it would allow me to monitor the status of connections and data transfer speeds.  Does anyone know of something free or very low-cost?  I have looked through my EE solutions and have not yet found one that fits this description.  I would GREATLY appreciate it, as I have struggled with this for some time.

You could run the built-in SMTP in IIS.

I am accepting this as the solution to the question I asked, but it's not actually the one I need.  I need a solution in which the gateway can also send to a smarthost, and the configuration described in this excellent article does not allow for that.  I failed to make my needs 100% clear in my question.
