Word Style Seperators disappear

We use a program that sends the Word 2003 document to the word processor with a template attached.  This template uses 9 levels of heading styles using the customized outline numbered list.

Each section heading of the document is used to generate a Table of Contents.  In order for the text of the paragraph to appear on the same line as the section heading, the hidden paragraph mark is used to separate the two styles (the software generates Word documents for earlier versions of Word that do not support the style separator).

If the document opens in a Word version other than Word 2000, the macro code in the template executes to replace all of the hidden paragraph marks with the style separator.  However, when the document is saved and then reopened, the style separator codes disappear.

Can anyone give us direction on why this might be happening?

I would begin by contacting the third party vendor who sold you the program....
