Hi,
this is a continious question of this : http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Servers/Q_23836198.html?cid=239#a22775189

I have an old compaq ML 530 server with 3 Scsi hardrive installed, now i have installed extra 2 hardrive, but i need to configure smart array 221 for this.

Now my confusion is : why do i  have to install software in linux to reconfigure smart array ??
is not something should be configure while system is booting ?? like if want to add another harddrive in normal pc, i will go to bios and then will add.  I dont add hardrive from OS, do i  ??

so why for Smart array i need to install from linux ??

You should be able to configure the array either via a small diagnostic partition which you installed at the very start of setting up the server (usually via the smartstart CD that came with the server), or by booting the server from the smartstart CD itself. Otherwise you can configure it by installing the array management software for your particular OS. This does make sense, as the smartarray controllers and HD's used by Compaq are normally hot pluggable, which means you can remove and add disks while the server is running, and you can also expand the array on the fly so you don't have any downtime.

One thing you should first ensure is that the array controller's battery is fresh (you say your server is old, so probably the battery is old or spent too). This battery helps in case something goes wrong. And you should also make sure the controller's firmware is as current as possible.

HI rindi
thanks, yes it does make sence
problem is , i found this server , you can say from scrap, so i dont have "small diagnostic partition " Cd, when i reboot the server it say, press F10, but when i press F10 , it say, partition is not installed.

(a)so how will i be able to obtain that cd ?? can i download for my version ??
(b) how will i check if the bettery is fresh ?? ( i dont know how to go to bios for this server)
c) I download this psp form this link http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=341571&prodNameId=3285469&swEnvOID=1025&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-UNITY-I21065#

now when i am have run  ./install710.sh

its saying : The prolient support pack for Red hat linux 8.0 is now in progress,
and its just sitting there for longggggggggg.
is this normal ??
my os is Centos 5 ( which is redhat 5 equvalent)

I'd just replace the battery on the Raid controller to be on the safe side.

I suggest you start an online chat with HP, that way you might get the Link to download the smartstart CD for your server, or you might be able to order it.

I don't know how long the support pack installation takes.
