Exchange SMTP Protocol Errors

We are running Exchnage 2003 on a Windows 2003 server.  The eventlog logs many of the following events:
Source MSExchange Transport
Category: SMTP Protocol
Event ID: 7004

This is an SMTP protocol error log for virtual server ID 1, connection #35. The remote host "1998.69.x.x.", responded to the SMTP command "xexch50" with "504 Need to authenticate first". The full commmand sent was "XEXCH50 2072 2". this will probably cause the connection to fail.

All of these errors contain different IP addresses. I  have searched for a solution for quite some time and dont seem to find the answer.  If anyone can help with this I would be so grateful!!!

Please reduce the SMTP logging to null since these errors do not mean anything. Basically Exchange would not let anyone else authenticate to its network (without valid credentials) hence XCH50 comes into the picture.

However, once the event is logged- Exchange does accept the message looking at the @domain.com.

Please reduce SMTP logging on your box.

Thanks for your help.  I did this and now I only get the message once in awhile.
