Using the PDF Create Assistant feature in ScanSoft Professinal 3.0 on Windows XP (SP2). PDF Create Assistant freezes when combining 4-7 Word and PDF files of less than 1MB each. There are no error messages, system resources are normal, and all appliations/processes apear to be running. After various Word and PDF docs are selected in the PDF Create Assistant from easily accessble network shares, the process freezes. User has waited up to a half hour before terminating process. Is there a cumlative file number and/or file size limit for this application/process? Any other ideas?

CSSupport2007,

This sounds like an issue where the software is looking for a file, drive, folder or network location that either does not exist or has been changed (rename, moved, user does not have access, etc).

Have you had a recent network change or did the user print to PDF in a folder before that they then deleted? Thus the folder can't be found and the loop is infinite in looking for that folder, resulting in a crash.

A newer version of this software is available (a substantial improvement, as they are now on version 5.0). A free trial download is available which could be used and see if it gets over your issue:

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Kevin,  Thank you for your well thought out response. We appear to have resolved this problem by unistalling the ScanSoft software and installing Adobe Pro 8. With Adobe, we have already tested, without issue, combining the same files that previously failed and which have always been easily accessible on a network share. As you referenced, there may be a problem with the version of the ScanSoft software we were using. Thank you.

Kevin,  Thanks for your well thought out response. You may be correct that is it s problem with the version of the ScanSoft software. Instead of upgrading, we have some available licenses for Adbobe 8 Pro and have intalled that on the client. Testing so far, combining the same files that previously failed, has shown no problems so far. Thanks

CSSupport2007,

It is AWESOME that you have the extra licenses available for Acrobat Pro 8. That would have been a later suggestion of mine, but I always like to take the "free road" if possible and save money. Make sure you run the updates for Acrobat Pro 8, which should take it up to 8.1.2 from 8.0. These security releases are important!

Thank you!
