Upgrade Citrix 4.5

I have 10 citrix PS4.5 servers all running Server 2003 R2 SP2.  PS4.5 has never been updated with any of the roll up updates or hot fixes and i have read many bad stories about it.  As i am beginning my process in to this upgrade i have a few questions.  1.  Is it possible to upgrade one server at a time or do i have to do all servers at the same time?  2.  Do i have to upgrade the data store/collector before any of the other servers?  3.  Is it truly just as simple and download, install , reboot and your done or is there a lot more to it?

Thanks

Rollup 3 contains all fixes from Rollup 1 and 2.

For Rollups you can do one server at a time but Citrix Best Practice is to have all servers in a farm on the same product version, feature level and update level.  So don't spend too much time between updating each server.

I would do the license server first, if it is running on a Presentation Server.
I would do the Data Collector next.
Then each server as soon as you can get to them.

It will require a reboot on each server so make sure you only do 1 server at a time.

Our License server, data collector and store are all on the first citrix server.  this server is a physical server where as the rest are all VM's.  I would like to do the upgrade on one of the VM servers first before the physical server as its much easier to go back if something happens.  Can that be done or not?

Also, is the upgrade as simple as download, next next next reboot or are there other things that need to be done as well.

Thanks

NO do NOT do it that way.  You should always update the servers in this order:

license server
data store
data collector
other servers

In your case 1 server has the main three roles.  Update that server first or you are asking for trouble.

Backup your data store, backup your web interface site, copy your secure gateway config files, backup your published apps and THEN you can apply updates.

our web inteface is on another a IIS server which is not on the first server.  doe sthat still need to be backed up?  Also, unless there is some behind the program secure gateway then we are not using that either.

Then you do not need to backup the Web Interface site at this time.  I would still back it up so you have something for DR.

Secure Gateway usually resides on the same computer as the WI.  Doesn't sound like you are using it or you would know.

so to make sure i get it right

1.  Backup the DS/DC
2.  Update the License server (is this a seperate file?)
3.  Update server 1 which is our DS/DC/LS
4.  Update each other server

What is the best way to recover a physical server from something like this if it goes wrong?  How long does this upgrade usually take?  What has to be done after the upgrade is done besides a reboot?  Any reg files changes etc?  Are there any pre upgrades that need to happen like .net, c++, etc?  We are using the default database program and not using SQL.

Sorry for all the questions but i have never done this before and from the looks of iit online this never seems to go well.

skip #2.  Your license server is running on the same server as DS/DC.

The license server is usually installed on a separate server.  99% of the time if Citrix updates will not apply to a server running the license server stuff.

Best way to recover: uninstall the update
Best way to make sure you don't have to do that: have a lab and test
After the update: test your apps, test you access to the server, test your printing, test your Citrix policies
The default DB is MS Access.  Use DSMAINT BACKUP to backup that file.  I create 5 separate scheduled tasks and backup to 5 different folders for Mon - Fri.

I always wait a month or more after a Rollup before installing at client sites.  That way you can check the support site for issues related to the update.  Rollup 2 has been out for a good while.  I would install it and not #3.  Let me and others play with #3 before you do.

Sounds good .  So when you say work with with teh rollup for a month does that mean work with it on the first server for a while and then upgrade the rest of the servers or should that all be done within a few days of the first server?

For YOU, I would install Rollup 2 on all servers.  Rollup 3 is too new to install right now.  Install RU2, wait a month and then check back for issues related to RU3.

couple  last question for you.  if you have done this update before how long did it take and did you have to update anything on the server like .net before you upgraded the to RU2?

update takes a few minutes and nothing needed to be done beforehand except the usual backups.
