HD chkdsk /f won't work
On try to do chkdsk /f get "This type of file is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk /f cannot run beause the volumne is in use by another process." Asks me if I would like to run chkdsk/f at startup. I check Y. On startup does not run. I tried to boot up from Windows boot disk to use repair but said i don't have an HD installed. But HD works as you can see. HD cuts off spysweeper and forces a restart when I run that. If I run chkdsk without /f incurs "deleting corrupt attribute record from file record statement" in several iterations and does not delete anything.. Believe chkdsk /f would solve problems if could get it started.. Thanks.
>> I tried to boot up from Windows boot disk to use repair but said i don't have an HD installed. << probably caused by a sata disk = nor recognised by the XP install disk; you need to give the sata driver with the F6 usqe during bootup : http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/installxpnew1_3.htm
try running chkdsk when booted from bart pe : www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Sorry, may not know all the proper protocol. Don't think I saw your answer before I stumbled on my solution. So, I was answering only the first person. Will do better next time. thanks.
>> the proper protocol << reading the help files helps a lot; till next time !
Try to download the ms-dos 5 or 6 version of chkdsk:

2..If it does not work thenCertainly sounds like bad.
If you *must* get any data off (business/irreplacable data) you might want to look into professional data recovery services.
If you are willing to take your chances I'd be inclined to look at something like http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/file_recovery/info.htm?language=1
In the meantime buy a new drive. :)
