Print Spooler Trouble

The print spooler and spooler subsystem app keep closing when I try to install and/or use HP LaserJet 1012 and 1018 printers.  I have experienced this problem while using Remote Desktop and connecting directly to the server.  Sometimes I can print to my local printer while working on the server via Remote Desktop, other times I cannot.

The LJ1012 and LJ1018 printers are 'host-based' devices and are probably not supported in network configurations.

I can't even get them to work when hooked up directly to the server.  Does Server 2008 have lots of incompatibility issues?

Working with a local IT professional, I verified  that Server 2008 does have some compatibility issues particularly with printers and printing support.  We installed drivers for a different HP printer using a procedure similar to some that are posted elsewhere on this site involving installing drivers for a "dummy" printer and then deleting that printer without deleting its drivers.  Then after rebooting, we added the HP LJ 1018 which can now be successfully used when printing jobs across a remote desktop session.
