Monitor says "no data received" when I connect it so it obviously knows something is there

Right click any where on the desktop -> Personalize -> display settings -> click the 2nd monitor -> check "extend desktop onto this monitor"

sorry, tried that first. It only shows one display. "(Default Monitor) on standard VGA Graphics Adapter. Shows the black box indicating monitor 1 but no monitor 2.

Should be. It is a quite new Vaio and I have used it with the external display before, also with presentations ie projectors. It has decided not to work now. I cannot think of what I could have done save that Vista seems really unstable.

I have looked in device manager and can only see under Display Adapters "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". Is this where I should also see the external screen or should I be looking elsewhere?

hold on, you said ONLY "standard VGA Adapter" there? Looks like you lost your driver for that. Try download and install the latest driver from their website.

not having much luck. The V7 site says

Here you can download drivers for V7 products.
All  products not mentioned in the zip file have
Plug & Play function and don´t need drivers.

On opening the Zip file there is a .exe whihc is dated 2001!!!  I try to run as administrator and nothing happens. Here is the site http://www.v7-world.com/197a07d5-b5d9-11db-9471-0015c5fb6342

No. Look at Sony's website to find the video driver for your laptop model.

Have gone back to Recovery disk. It seems I need the NVidia GEForce 8400M GS GPU but NVidia sends me to Sony & Sony does not seem to have the drivers. Will try again tomorrow.

Fixed it. Found the Recovery disk I made when I first got the PC and uploaded drivers from that. Thanks for your help. Sony site is hopeless to navigate.
