Hub's "shared printer" option not working automatically

I have AT&T DSL line connected to a 2WIRE Wireless Router with DSL Modem (2701HG-B Gateway).  From 2WIRE, I run an Ethernet cable to a D-Link DI-604 Router (non-wireless) on the desk in my office.  Two laptops are connected to the D-Link Router - one running Vista Business, the other XP.  I added a Belkin Network USB Hub (F5L009) to the Router to allow the laptops to share a HP Officejet Pro L7780 All-in-One for printing/scanning/faxing (plus, will add two 1-terabyte drives once I work out the bugs on the printer).  Followed instructions in Belkin Setup Guide, including choosing the option "This is a shared printer, automatically connect and disconnect only when printing."   Two problems: (1) printer will not automatically swap between laptops when printing; must manually request printer from previous user; (2) can't seem to get scanner or fax portions to work.  Any suggestions?

The non printing functions of multifunction printers will usually not work through the LAN. For that to work you should get a printer with integrated LAN And then you'll also get software for the printer that supports this.

Your printer actually seems to have a builtin NIC and wireless, so you should use that and not connect it to the USB HUB.

I tried connecting it wirelessly to the 2WIRE router, but then all processes slowed to a crawl.  It became impossible to scan documents, as the printer/scanner/fax seemed to fail or time-out on any document of more than two pages.  TOTALLY FRUSTRATED!!!  finally just connected the printer via eathernet to the non-wireless router in our office.  I can now print/scan/fax from the two laptops in my office, but the two other computers in the building (one laptop running wirelessly, one desktop connected via eathernet to the 2WIRE router) cannot use the printer - cannot even find it in our network!  If we need to print a document from one of these computers, we must e-mail it and print from the office OR copy to a thumb drive and open/print from the office.
