I thought I have used SQL Management Studio with SQL Server 2008 before and on download for Microsoft it takes you to same SMSE as for SQL Server 2005.  Make sure your SQL Server is configured for remote login, you can usually check this from the tools provided under Program Files program group for SQL Server.  There is surface area and configuration manager.  The Configuration Manager will allow you to add a new administrator as well.

Basically, you should be able to connect to the server after it is registered in SMSE with the sa (administrative account) and then you can create database from there.
