IRC chat server?

Hi,

I'm looking to develop a simple game that requires message passing for game commands. Can I use an IRC server as the basis for such a thing?

I basically want to be able to track state, which players are in which room, let players talk to one another, let them send private messages too.

Is there some IRC server package I could use as a basis?

Thanks

IRC is not a good solution to achieve what you want.
it's an old (hardly) dying protocol that shall be replaced by more recent ones like jabber/xmpp.

You'd better look into using XMPP (protocol behind jabber) that is designed for that kind of usage.

I, personally, never tried anything else than jabberd2.
