How to shade an image?

I have attached an image to which I want to do some shading using Adobe Photoshop CS2. Please can somebody let me know the steps to follow.

What do you mean by shading?
Gradient, like this?

Yes but using single color.

Ok, you need to decided whether you are fading from orange to white (paper color) or orange to transparent.
1) Create a document the correct size you want
2) Choose the colour you want.
3) Use the gradient tool. Make sure you choose the correct setting from the options bar. (Foreground to background, or foreground to transparent. Then Linear gradient. These tools are shown below.

And it's settings appear on the option bar at the top left. You have the gradient picker that allows you to choose between what colours the shading operates. Choose foreground to backkground and make sure the background is white.
Then you have the the gradient style. Choose Linear.
