How to enable video output while laptop is open

I want video on my laptop screen AND the monitor connect to the video output at the same time.
How do I do this?

Press Fn + F4.
If  you cannot get it to display both you may have outdated video drivers.

ok that works, though it looks odd.
I guess the resolution is that of the laptop display, which is different from what it would be if displaying only to the monitor. no way around this?

Depending on your video drivers you may be able to set different resolutions for each monitor. I am not familiar with your exact model but try going to display settings. If it displays a graphic of two monitors try clicking on each one and set an appropriate resolution.
