I have setup an analysis services on SQL 2005 and have some questions.

1. Using the Analysis Service templates - Adventure Works Enterprise Edition, I have created the Mesaure, dimensions and time dimenison. Only time dimension is filled up with default date. The other measures and dimensions are empty. Does it mean that the template just create the initial structure such that we could modify it further to fill my actual need ? In real case, do we usually use the template to start everything from scratch ?

2. Based on the instruction from a tutorial, I will export the data from the AdventureWorksDW and import it to my cube database. Could I just write SQL to export the data from AdventureWorks ?

3. I believe the data in AdventureWorksDW is tranformed based on AdventureWork. However, the primary key in DimProduct (AdventureWorksDW) and Product (AdventureWorks) doesn't match each other. If data in AdventureWorksDW is come from AdventureWorks, do we need to concern how to relate the date back in AdventureWorksDw back to AdventureWorks ? Can anyone give me some idea how to export the data to AdventureWorksDW ??

Many thanks.

1. Adventureworks template is only for educational purposes. You must create your own project from the beginining.
2. You will process and copy data to your OLAP database structure that you create in SSAS (UDM)

3. Why you want to export data from AdventureWorksDW? This database suport your OLAP database. All the tranasformations should already be done in this step. the AdventureWorksDW is you denormalized database that process data into OLAP. The DimProduct is different than Product because, DimProduct is a denormalized table with SurrogateKey and Product has only the business key. Check articles about SurrogateKeys and BusinessKeys in Kimbal University website
