Database.search in a webservice (domino designer): need a reference

I'm writing webservice and i need a reference on how to build a search string in domino designer. I'm doing it in java.

As an exemple, i got that one works,

DocColl=ContactDB.search("Form=\"Contact\" & LastName=\""+LastName+"\"", null, 0);

ContactDB is a Database
DocColl is a DocumentCollection
LastName is a string parameter.

So I want more detail on how it work, ex how could i get all the ones that sart with a "A"
(the TSQL equivalent to " like 'A%' ")

There are many functions in the formula language. The string you have to build for searching all docs with lastname like A% would be

Form="Contact" & @Left(LastName; 1)="A"

There are too many functions, so you'd better look 'em up in the Domino Designer Help database.
