Hi,

Would anybody know how to check what firmware version I am running on my xbox 360???

Dashboard - System - Console Settings - System Info
Will get you the System Software version (this isn't strictly firmware)

The only other firmware you might want is the optical drive which you could get from linking to a PC and running any of a number of third party tools (most of which are desgined to also upload firmware to the drive).

I will need to do further research in regards to the optical drive fw version which i was interested in.

For DVD firmware identification try here:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD_Drive_Comparison.htm
That should help you ID your drive after that you may need to open the case to get the specific version
