Helvetica could not be embedded in the PDF because of licensing restrictions

I have a Mac user who now with the Helvetica-Condensed-Black font gives this error:

The followign issues were encountered when saving the document:
The font Helvetica-Condensed-Black could not be embedded in the PDF document because of licensing restrictions.  Stroked text will not be visible.
The font Helvetica-Condensed-Black could not be embedded in the PDF document because of licensing restrictions.  Stroked text will not be visible.

It lists it twice.  All  you get is OK or cancel.

Has anyone seen anything like this.

I have also attached the picture file in its original form.

Thanks,

Ted

Is this the only user who has problems with that specific font? Can all other fonts be embedded? Which PDF job options profile are you using on the PDF options dialog?

TheGr81Ted,

Modern fonts allow a number of restrictions to be attached to them. Sounds like when your user is trying to create the PDF, they are trying to use a font with embedding restrictions applied. You'll probably want to take a look at the font file and see what restrictions apply to that particular font.

Here's some additional information from Adobe on restrictions and on how to view any restrictions for a particular font:
http://www.adobe.com/type/embedding.html

Yes this is the only user as we only have 1 user who uses a mac with the Adobe CS3 suite.  All other fonts work fine.

It is strange as the user is not crating a PDF.  She is saving the file as a .ai or adobe illustrator file.  This happens when she wants to create outlines on the font and then goes to save the illustrator file.

Thanks,

Ted

Lherrou,

Thanks for the comment.  This is a apple system font that is having the issue.  We do have a font manager, but we are not using that for this document.  It did work last friday, but over the weekend it quit working.  Again, we are not creating a PDF document it is when the user saves the illustrator file as a .ai file.

Thanks,

Ted

Have the user start the FontBook application on the Mac. Then select the font in question and use Cmd-I (or Apple-I) to bring up more information about the font. Does it show as "Embeddable: No"?

>> We do have a font manager... It did work last friday, but over the weekend it quit working.

Hmm. Sounds like perhaps you have larger problems that this is a symptom of? Unless you know of the cause of the Font Manager failure,  I'd suspend any work on that Mac until you can check for viruses or a failing HD as a starting place - sounds like corruption issues or something similar.

The .ai format is a very close relative of the PDF format. I don't know enough about Illustrators internal format to point out the differences, but it's possible that the font embedding rules are similar too. However, if it worked last Friday, and all of a sudden it does not work anymore, then it's very likely not the "Embeddable" flag in the font (unless somebody replaced the font).

Is there a difference between a normal Save operation and a "Save As"?

I agree with LHerrou, you may be looking at a disk failure. Do you have a tool like DiskWarrior that would allow you to analyze the disk?

khkremer/lherrou,

I will check the disk to see if something is wrong there.  unless I missed some tech news, I know of no known viruses in the wild for the Mac OS X operating system.  Thanks for your help,

I did a disk check and permissions check both came back fine.  I also just for the heck of it ran a virus scan as we use Norton AV 11 for Mac.  That found nothing as well.

If any one else has any suggestions that would be great.  I am also checking into some local resources at a place I do business with as they are an Apple Certified Partner.

Thanks,

Ted

Have you tried to see if a Save As behaves differently than a regular Save operation? Have you also verified that the font in question is embeddable?

Yes, I had the user do a save or a save as and it does the same thing.  We Use Extensis suitcase fusion and i did the info on the font, but it doesn't give any info on if it is able to be embedded.

Thanks,

Ted

What happens when you try to open those .AI files on another system?

I cannot open it on another system at our location as we only have one mac for our graphics person.  all the rest are pc's.  I will see if she can send it to someone else and see if they have the issue as well.

Thanks,

Ted

This was the fix I told would work.  I am having another tech person come in that knows a bit more about the Adobe projects.

Here's the solution:
Deacitvate all Helveticas on your Mac.
Open the file in AI and ignore the font warnings.
Replace Helvetica with some off the wall font not in the file, like Courier.
Save the file.
Quit AI.

This was from the link I posted earlier.
